But to tell scientists, "just don't publish in academic journals" is not going to solve this either. There are nuances.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04243142395384726052noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211622996251937940.post-22753710167379045392014-04-28T12:57:02.225-07:002014-04-28T12:57:02.225-07:00Blaming the publishing industry for problems in ac...Blaming the publishing industry for problems in academia is like blaming the state of Nevada for your gambling problem.
Don't point fingers at the enablers when you are the ones who enable the enablers. This is a deep and serious issue, but ultimately the blame lies with the $6b for-profit publishing industry and with us scientists in supporting the current publishing system. In reality, it probably made the widespread bending of scientific truth WORSE because embedded now within the lie is a political motivation (see: climate science) or a promise of power and influence. The only way for this to work itself out is for the public to be adequately educated enough to possess the capacity to be vigilant and repudiate scientists caught misrepresenting the truth.

In the meantime, the only thing I can say is...more power to this scientist for taking control of their life and finding happiness. I only hope that I, too, can escape living in near poverty and find something more stable and fulfilling. In a lot of academia including my sub-field of science (physical sciences), things are much better than what you have described. Perhaps, under the scrutiny of the larger science community, your former field may be forced to fix itself, something which will likely not happen on its own.physicahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17872707684388845367noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211622996251937940.post-72496439147352783632014-04-22T06:16:04.692-07:002014-04-22T06:16:04.692-07:00Your departure is disappointing. One less person searching for the truth. When enough of you quit, who will be left to object to the nonsense that will be advertised as truth? So while i understand your decision, i am disappointed for us, the country that has benefitted from your efforts.Bobhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/13871772876711896593noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4211622996251937940.post-67234255977755483822014-04-22T05:20:50.821-07:002014-04-22T05:20:50.821-07:00A funded investigator I am aware of told his train...A funded investigator I am aware of told his trainees: Publish everything, they will forget what is wrong and only remember what is right.
But we all know this happens.
I knew another funded investigator that indulged in "front-running" his grants. The work was completed and then he submitted a grant, producing a paper in a matter of months. The funding agencies were apparently delighted.
But we all know this happens.
I never submitted a grant, I couldn't get past the question "but what if it doesn't work out?" So I did small projects and never had much of a career in academics as a result. Left academics eventually, and now I occasionally do a small project that I am interested in, and have never gotten any published, but that's OK, because it is real science. We had to hide the things that happened that didn’t make sense. We couldn’t just be who we were in reality, we had to market ourselves. It would be too confusing to people, they wouldn’t be interested in us if we didn’t make ourselves look good, make our story perfect, like we knew what we were doing all along"

I publish slowly and have never had a large grant, as I do the 'wort's and all'.
